From Chrysalis to Flight
This collection started as an exercise from the book Paint Mojo A Mixed Media Workshop by Tracy Verdugo. When my retail job was shut down due to the pandemic, I took advantage by spending more time in my studio creating. I was pleased at how my first butterfly turned out and wanted to practice repetition in my work. I love what the butterfly represents. There is a process of darkness and uncertainty, of change and transformation. For me the pandemic was all those things as well as for many other people. My hope and expectation was that we would emerge from the time changed, renewed and ready to fly. Each butterfly has an underpainting of color with scriptures or song lyrics written on them to bring encouragement. In some paintings the writing is visible but most are covered over with layers of paint and gelli prints.

Mini Butterflies

The Mini Butterflies are a bit different in style. The canvases are covered in paint first. Then I carved the butterflies in linoleum and printed them on tissue paper. The tissue paper becomes almost transparent once adhered to the canvas. I added bits gold or silver to the butterfly to make it shine.
